This week I challenge you to write outside your comfort zone. Pick a genre that you don’t normally write. Are you a poet that avoids the short story like vampires (rumor has it) avoid garlic? Are you a songwriter that has dreamed of creating a play? Whatever your expertise, step away from it this once and try something new. Are you up to the challenge?
Challenge: Outside Your Comfort Zone
Word count: 4,000 words or less
Genre: flash fiction, poem, short story, essay, song, scene from a film script or play, etc.
Due date: next Friday*
Prompt: Pick a genre outside of your comfort zone. If you’re confident in your abilities, begin writing immediately. If you’re unsure how you should shape your story within your genre, seek out essays on craft. You can find many helpful links on past issues of The Monday Post. Focus on adapting your writing style to fit this new genre. Hopefully, this will help you become a more versatile writer (unless you’re already a master, which is great)!
*If you want to share your writing with us, link your work to A Vase of Wildflowers on your blog and make sure to place the link to your story in the comments of this post.
