Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Lydia dies at the bottom of a lake. Her parents, in shock, cannot accept her death. Her brother looks for a murderer. Her sister secretly hopes to be loved in her sister’s place.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng is a literary thriller about a mixed race family in Ohio during 1970s America. The story tells each character’s background with finesse, explaining how their actions and thoughts affect the people around them. Marilyn wishes to become a doctor instead of just someone’s wife. James wants to be accepted and treated like the American that he is. Nathan and Hannah want to be loved by their parents. Lydia was too afraid to know what she wanted.

While the topic might seem familiar, I assure you the writing is brilliant and beautiful. It was well worth every second I spent listening to the audiobook. Ng’s writing is raw, real, and highlights what it means to be human. It’s a book about a tragedy and yet it is filled with hope.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I’d recommend it to every adult and young adult in the entire world. Please do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Celeste Ng is a winner of the Hopwood Award and a recipient of the Pushcart prize. Her work has been featured in One Story, TriQuarterly, Bellevue Literary Review, the Kenyon Review Online, and other publications.
