Backing Up Your Work Is Good for Your Blood Pressure

Yesterday, my dog decided to chew up my life’s work in a matter of minutes. Cattleya (my dog) stealthily picked up my flash drive while I was watching a movie and began to munch on the crunchy stick. Thankfully, I caught her in mid-consumption and was able to save her from swallowing anything harmful.

But I was mad.

Really mad.

I could hear my heartbeat in my ears mad.

But God was looking out for my puppy. I ran to the computer and stuck the flash drive in the USB port. I waited — and prayed — and after a few moments the computer recognized the flash drive and pulled up all of my work. Immediately, I saved everything I had onto the computer.

Then I ran out and bought two flash drives.

Thankfully they are no longer 2GB for $50 (the price of my original one). I then proceed to save all of my work onto the new flash drives. Then I emailed all of the most important work to myself.

Moral of the story? Back up your work. Because no one’s blood pressure should be that high.

In your spare time, give your dog a bone.

Collie, lucky puppy, bone, dog crate
The lucky puppy.

  1. I have heard of the dog eating the homework, but not a flash drive version. I will have to say I laughed at your dog issue, but sorry for your heart rate. The bone is a good idea.

  2. I’m glad that your pup is all right. Hope the writing is going well for nano, I haven’t had time to update the site, but keep at it. I’ll try to update sometime before the weekend.

    1. Thank you. NaNoWriMo writing is going well! I’ve hit the goal everyday, although my chart doesn’t reflect it because I’ve been plagued by the 404 errors like everyone else. I’m hoping to get ahead this weekend and finish before the ending of the month.

I hope it’s going well for you! 🙂

    1. Thanks! I am grateful it didn’t turn out worse than it did. What was most important was that my puppy was safe. 🙂 Also, I’m kind of glad I didn’t lose my life’s work! Haha!

  3. There’s no bigger fear than losing something I’ve been working on. So this is what I do to ensure disaster doesn’t strike:

I do most of my writing on the iPad using Pages so the story is saved in the app (1). Then I immediately back it up to cloud servers Dropbox (2) and Box (3). I later upload it from Dropbox to my wife’s PC (4). Also, every now and then I upload all of it to my home wireless cloud (5) and also to a portable external hard drive (6) or two (7) or three (8). And finally, every once in a blue moon I’ll save it to a thumb drive (9).

    Better safe than sorry.
